Role- Lead Product designer(UX/UI Designer)

The iHCD platform is an adaptable and secure cloud-based application that manages and supports human-centered design for government agency end-users, stakeholders, and projects. The platform incorporates the best practices of the General Services Administration (GSA) 18F 4-phase method guide, the principles of the United States Digital Services (USDS) Playbook, and agency-specific processes. The iHCD model is delivered as a Human-Centered Design as a Service (HaaS).

Below are the key highlights of my human-centered design process that led to the final product. All designs and research were completed by me, but they are copyrighted by Airodigital.

Research and Ideate

In my product design process, I always begin with conducting comprehensive research. This helps me gain a better understanding of the target audience and their needs. Based on this research, I define problem statments, understand/create Personas, Journey maps, etc. Which enable me to develop a more constructive approach to designing a product that meets the needs of the users.

Stakeholder and user Interviews

To ensure the success of any product, my first step is always to connect with the stakeholder and understand their vision. For this project, I began by conducting remote, structured but open-ended stakeholder interviews. Based on the feedback received, I also included users such as top managers from CMS, HCD experts, and UI designers. Through these interviews, I was able to identify the following problem statements/findings.

  • Agencies do not have a comprehensive look into their Human Centred Design (HCD) practice or have access to all the data related to user experience, preferences, usability, or other design-thinking aspects of projects across an enterprise.
  • Lack of an integrated HCD data warehouse, data insights, or data analytics for future reuse or improved performance across enterprise systems.
  • While there are disparate HCD tools in the market, they do not exist in one integrated platform.
    • i. Multiple sign-ins
    • ii. Multiple applications store data in different formats.
  • HThe HCD process varies from project to project based on the type of HCD being undertaken by the system owners at an enterprise/agency.
    • Approaches to HCD led by individuals make scaling HCD difficult.
    • Different types of projects have different methods and methodologies for HCD.
  • Lack of standardization of the HCD business process leads to dissimilar results in the same organizations. Some are more successful than others.
  • Lack of standardized HCD training across an enterprise.

Personas

User personas illustrate the expectations and interactions of users with the product. Initial research identified 3 personas. Out of which below is one persona.

Whiteboarding / Brainstorming Flows

Based on extensive research of Human-Centered Design methodologies, I conducted brainstorming and whiteboarding sessions with product owners and stakeholders to define the basic structure and user journey of the application. Below are some outcomes derived from those sessions.
